Scored Hershey's Christmas Tree Tutorial

PLEASE NOTE: There is an updated version of this tutorial HERE!

I was working on a sample for my club workshops, when a flash of inspiration led me to design this tree. With a little tweaking and some input from friends and my fellow demonstrators at Splitcoaststampers, the result is a really adorable Christmas tree. These trees might look hard to make, but they are actually quite easy.

Want to make LOTS of these trees? I'm including some shortcut time saver steps you can take if you would like to make a forest of Hershey's Christmas trees like I did.

The Hershey's Christmas trees stand approximately 4" tall by 3-1/4" wide. Each tree uses nine Hershey's Kisses and two Hershey's Nuggets.

I have created BOTH a video tutorial and a step-by-step tutorial below...

Scored Hershey's Christmas Tree Tutorial

Step One

1. Tree Frame: Begin with a 10-1/8” x 2” piece of Garden Green Card Stock. On the long side, score at 3-¼”, 6-½” and 9-¾”.

Step Two

2. On the short side score at 1”.

Step Three

3. Squeeze some multipurpose liquid glue lengthwise along the strip.

Step Four

4. Fold the strip in half lengthwise and use your bone folder to burnish the strip.

Step Five

5. Fold the strip along the score lines. Squeeze some multipurpose liquid glue onto the tab end.

Step Six

6. Bring the ends of the piece together to form a triangle. Make sure you hold the tab down for a few seconds so that the glue can seal the card stock fibers together. Set aside.

Step Seven

7. Tree Insert Pieces: Begin with a 11” x 2” piece of Garden Green Card Stock. On the long side score at all the inch marks (ie. 1”, 2”, 3” etc.)

Step Eight

8. Cut this piece in half lengthwise at the 1” mark.

Step Nine

9. Then take one of the strips and cut it at the 4” mark.

Step Ten

10. You should now have 3 one-inch strips 4”, 7” and 11” long.

Step Eleven

11. Take the longest strip and fold it into a strip of triangles.

Step Twelve

12. Fit the folded triangle strip into the bottom of the tree frame.

Step Thirteen

13. Next, take the medium length strip and fold it into triangles.

Step Fourteen

14. Fit the folded triangle strip into the row above the first strip in the tree frame.

Step Fifteen

15. Now fold the smallest strip into a triangle.

Step Sixteen

16. Fit the triangle into the top spot of the tree frame.

Step Seventeen

17. Pop 9 Hershey’s Kisses into the triangular spaces.

Step Eighteen

18. Tie with an 18” length of grosgrain.

Step Nineteen

19. Tree Trunk: Start with a piece of Chocolate Chip Card Stock 5-3/4” x 2”, On the long side score at 1”, 2-3/8”, 3-3/8” and 4-3/4”.

Step Twenty

20. On the short side, score at 1”.

Step Twenty-one

21. Squeeze some multipurpose liquid glue lengthwise along the strip.

Step Twenty-two

22. Fold the strip in half lengthwise and use your bone folder to burnish the strip.

Step Twenty-three

23. Squeeze some multipurpose glue onto one of the ends of the strip.

Step Twenty-four

24. Now fold on the other score marks and adhere to form a rectangle. Place two strips of sticky strip on the edges of the rectangle.

Step Twenty-five

25. Remove the sticky strip liner and adhere the tree to the trunk. Pop 2 Hershey’s nuggets into the trunk piece.

Step Twenty-six

26. Finish off the tree as desired. I suggest packaging the trees in one of Stampin' Up's clear envelopes (see above photo). This will ensure that the kisses stay in place for gift-giving.

Timesaver Tips

Time Saver for Step One

Time Saver Step 1 Begin with a 10-1/8” x 8” piece of Garden Green Card Stock. On the long side, score at 3-¼”, 6-½” and 9-¾”.

Time Saver for Step Two

Time Saver Step 2 On the short side score at 1”, 3”, 5”, 7”. Also on the short side, cut the card stock into 2” strips. You should now have enough outer frame pieces to create FOUR trees.

Time saver for Steps Seven to Nine

Time Saver Steps 7-9 Begin with a 11” x 8” piece of Garden Green Card Stock. On the long side score at all the inch marks (ie. 1”, 2”, 3” etc.). On the 8” side cut the card stock into one-inch strips. Then cut four of the strips at the 4-inch mark. This will give you enough insert strips to create FOUR trees.

Time Saver for Step Nineteen

Time Saver Step 19 Start with a piece of Chocolate Chip Card Stock 5-3/4” x 10”, On the 5-3/4” side score at 1”, 2-3/8”, 3-3/8” and 4-3/4”.

Time Saver for Step Twenty

Time Saver Step 20 On the 10” side, score at 1”, 3”, 5”, 7” and 9”. Also on the 10” side, cut the card stock into two-inch strips. You should now have enough trunk pieces to create FIVE trees.

    32. This is a really adorable tree. I know I'll be making some this year for special friends. I'm interested that you use Tombow Multi Adhesive in so many places. Can you tell us why you prefer it over Sticky Tape? Thank you for sharing your creativity!

      ReplyDelete
      Replies
      1. Hi Alice, I'm glad you like the trees. The reason I prefer Tombow Multipurpose adhesive is that it bonds the fibers of the card stock together. Especially when preparing the long strips, it almost makes the two sides become one (in other words a thicker piece of card stock). If you bend a similar strip that has been adhered with sticky strip, you might find that it buckles in certain places, leaving an undesirable gap. On the smaller tabs, sticky strip would be fine, but since I had the Tombow out I went with it instead. It really works well. I challenge you to try both types of adhesive and report back. :)

    40. Absolutely love this!!! Perfect for some favors that I wanted to make. Can I ask you where you got the markers for your scoring board? I have been looking for some for quite a while and can't find any.

      ReplyDelete
      Replies
      1. I'm glad you like my trees. The markers only fit Stampin' Up's Simply Scored Scoring Board (122334) which comes with 3 markers. You can also purchase additional markers (125625) in a pack of 6. The Simply Scored board is really useful when making multiples, because you can set your markers and not have to look up the measurements each time you score. It saves a lot of time. The other really great thing about the Simply Scored is the stylus tool. It feels much nicer in the hand than a bone folder. If you click on my store button above and enter the items numbers, you can have a closer look at the Simply Scored and its features. Please email me if you have any additional questions.

    60. Hi, these are SUPER CUTE! I am making them for my son's classmates but I am having slight difficulties. lol. My trees are ending up only 3" tall which isn't allowing the rest to fall together....ideas where I could be going wrong? I had a friend try it also and she comes up with the same problem. Seems as though 10-1/8 isn't long enough.....HELP! Thanks!!

      ReplyDelete
      Replies
      1. I'm glad that you like my trees. I'm going to help you troubleshoot. Many crafters have already completed these trees from my measurements and yours is the first problem that I've heard of, so I'm going to assume that my measurements are correct. The triangle portion of the tree will measure 3" high. Each side of the triangle is 3-1/4" long. What part is not fitting? I would suggest reading over the instructions once more and watching the video once more to see if that will help clarify. If not, post another comment with specific questions and I will try to help.

      Replies
      1. Thanks so much for your kind comment. In this first version, some of the kisses would slide out rather easily. I have since re-done this tutorial twice (both versions can be found in my tutorials section) and with these later versions the kisses stay in by the tension created with the filler strips and the foil wrapping of the kisses. Here is the latest version of this tutorial: http://qbeesquest.blogspot.com/2015/07/hersheys-christmas-tree-simplified.html

    95. Like the others, I very much appreciate your generosity! I do have one question: how do you keep the candy from falling out since there is no back piece?

      ReplyDelete
      Replies
      1. Hi Lisa, Thanks for your comment. In this my first version of the Hershey's Christmas tree, the kisses weren't as snug, so I updated my tutorial so that the tree was tighter. Now the kisses stay in without glue and without a backing, simply because the filler strips and the foil from the wrappers keeps them in place. For the lastest version of this tutorial see here: http://qbeesquest.blogspot.com/2015/07/hersheys-christmas-tree-simplified.html
